Georgian Bars

Georgian bars and grids can be achieved in any pattern, to give a Cottage look. They are incorporated within the sealed unit, in between the two panes of glass, and as a result the window cleaner will thank you!

This window installed in Kidlington in 2018 was just what the customer was looking for!

Astragal Bars

Astragal bars do the same job as georgian bars, but they are more authentic to the look of the old timber window bars, as seen in this Admiral Windows installation on a farm near Watlington. They are on the outside surface of both panes of glass with what we call a "duplex grid" in the cavity of the sealed unit. This gives the appearance of individual panes.

Not ideal for the window cleaner though!

Feature frame versus Bevelled frame

Windows generally come in two aesthetically different styles.

The feature frame has an ovolo detail and is by far the most popular choice amongst our customers.

The bevelled frame replicates the putty lines of the old style original timber windows.

Equal mullions widths, equal glass widths and equal sight lines

Please don't pass this topic by.......it could make a considerable improvement to the overall appearance of your new windows and is well worth knowing about the options available.

uPVC window with Equal Mullion Widths

"Spot The Difference"

These three windows are the same size and same style, but are all different.

If you don't have a preference then you are likely to have the first example. This window has the width of the mullions split equally. It is known as an "equal mullion widths" window.

uPVC window with Equal Glass Widths

The second window shows an example of  the mullions being moved inwards slightly. You may notice the glass widths of all three sections are the same widths. This is known as an "equal glass widths" window.

This is particularly useful when you have georgian or astragal bar grid patterns, because the smaller panes will all be the same width. This option does not increase the cost of the window, and as the casements are slightly wider than the first example it is a better option for fire escape!

uPVC window with Dummy sashes and equal glass widths

And finally, the third option has a dummy sash in the centre section. This equalises all components, so the sashes are the same size and the glass dimensions are the same. This type of window is call "equal sight lines" or "full sash". The additional sash will add to the cost of the window.
